Marking World TB Day!
BINGHAM UNIVERSITY’S ZANKLI RESEARCH CENTRE MARKS WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY 2023.
The
Zankli Research Centre joined other local as well as international
organizations to commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on March 24. This day
had been observed since the year 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch, German physician
and microbiologist, announced that he had discovered the organism that causes
TB.
The
theme for this year's World TB Day: ‘Yes! We can end TB!’ conveys a message of
hope and getting back-on-track to turn the tide against the TB epidemic through
high-level leadership, increased investments, adoption of innovations,
accelerated action and multi-sectoral collaborations.
The
event was marked with a road walk from Kuchikau to Masaka Market to raise
awareness of the disease. The Team from the Centre and Master students from the
Department of Community Medicine and Primary Health Care distributed fliers and
engaged members of the community on the need to get tested as early detection
is key in the treatment of the disease.
A
courtesy call was paid to the Chief of Masaka, HRH Chetubo Bisala, to seek collaborations
in ending TB epidemic especially within the locality. The Director of Zankli
Research Centre, Dr. John Bimba informed the Chief that the diagnosis and
treatment of TB is free. He added that the basic signs to look for in
tuberculosis include cough of two weeks duration, weight loss, fever and night
sweat. He added that persons experiencing these symptoms should visit the
Centre or any dedicated health centres within the State. He noted that TB
mainly affects the lungs, but it is preventable, treatable and curable and
encouraged those who have been affected to complete treatment to avoid
infecting others.
Speaking,
HRH Bisala thanked the team for the visit stating that he was willing to
collaborate with the Centre in ending TB in his locality. He added that they
should be free in creating the awareness needed as they have his full support.
