MASTERING THE ART OF WRITING AND JOURNALISM: UNLEASHING YOUR PROWESS

On the 29th of August,2023 a capacity-strengthening session was held with Mr. Daburi Misal, the Director of Public Affairs of Bingham University, organized by Mr Andrew Oguntolu for research assistants (RAs) and interns of Zankli Research Center, Bingham University. It was aimed at broadening the knowledge of the participants on mastering the art of writing and journalism.

Mr. Misal, started with a brief introduction on what writing and journalism are and their requirements. He also outlined the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when & why) and H (how) of writing for media and blogs. He stated that these are a set of fundamental questions that journalists and writers often use to gather information, organize thoughts and ensure that a story or piece of writing is comprehensive and answers the essential questions readers may have.

                                  .

Notably, he laid emphasis on following the basics, which is, to first understand what a good piece of writing looks like. To achieve this, he encouraged participants to explore the anatomy of a well-structured publication, unraveling its essence to create narratives that resonate. Also, he encouraged participants to immerse themselves in the articles strewn across websites, blogs, and Facebook pages of different universities, both at home and abroad. This helps one figure out what works well in writing.

He went further to say writing begins with a captivating and eye-catching title. The artistry lies in crafting titles that act as a siren’s call, summoning readers into the narrative’s depth. He said that a title should be captivating and should make people curious and excited to read more. He emphasized making sure everything one writes is factual. This can be achieved by double-checking facts and figures and ensuring that every word rings with authenticity.

Finally, he urged participants to create a niche for themselves regarding writing and journalism and expand their intellectual horizons beyond their specific domains. He further urged participants to apply themselves to writing and write regularly to improve their skills. ‘Just like learning to play an instrument, writing gets better with practice’ he said.

In a world where information vies for our fleeting attention, the art of media writing becomes more crucial than ever. Armed with Mr Misal's pearls of wisdom, participants are ready to not just share information but also make it engaging and ensure it is captivating. They are excited to keep using these tips as they write for media (blogs, reports and stories) and leave a mark on those who read them.
